Keep It Under Your Hat

A Look Back at 2007:
cool_sm.jpg

Look out at any MLB or MiLB playing field this spring, and you'll see the quiet revolution.

Last summer, after the tragic death of base coach Mike Coolbaugh, I was the lone voice in the wilderness, calling for required head-gear for base coaches (See: The Height of Cool, MAJOR BLOGS, 07.29.07).

I didn't get much support from anyone else in the media.  Even my good friend, the progressive Branch Rickey, said that the base coaches themselves would nix helmets (VIP Room 08.02.07 )

Apparently I was not alone after all. I had the...

Reviving the Classic Sports Illustration

MAJOR BLOGS - www.majorblogs.net - The minor league games have MAJOR sports fans, so, along with your passion for the purer form of the sport, we brought back something equally cool and old-school. Most of us are too young to remember the sports illustrations that used to appear in newspapers across America. Ever wonder why they call it "Sports Illustrated" and not sports photographed? Illustrations became a vanishing art form by the...

Boston Herald Columnist Steve Buckley is Full of Bulls

MAJOR BLOGS - www.majorblogs.net - On Monday Steve Buckley, "general" sports columnist at the Boston Herald, rattled out "At heart of Duke-ness," one of those homer tomes on Beantown college basketball that die-hahd Boston fans eat up, but which land like Lunesta on anyone outside of the hallowed ground of the Massachusetts sports mecca. In the process of trashing Duke basketball, a time-honored ritual of the sports writers around college programs jealous of the Coach K machine, he decided to nuke Durham Bulls baseball, Toledo Mud Hens baseball and Minor League Baseball in the process. "In the end, though, that’s all there is to Durham, N.C. When there is no college basketball being played, it is just another minor league tank town. The Durham Bulls. Oh. Lovely," drops Buckley into his March madness beantown bombast. He then winds up with: "And I’d rather be watching Red Sox-Yankees on a steamy August night than Bulls-Mud Hens." Now, admittedly, that qualifies as pretty progressive thinking from a sports writer in...

One Football. Two Games. - Arena Football (AFL) Comes Out from Under the NFL's Long Shadow

Milwaukee Admirals Logo Change Sinks to New Deppths

OPINION - Apparently someone from the Milwaukee Admirals looking to refresh their logo reads Variety, the movie trade rag. They must have noticed that the box office for all things pirates is up this year after the release of Pirates of the Caribbean 2. There is nothing, after all, more logo worthy than a lusty pirate...

The Devil Goes Down to Durham

Updated on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 08:27AM by Registered CommenterBrian Ross

When Bill Evers was reassigned to the D-Rays, people worried that it might get dull in Durham. After all, how do you top Evers' winning ways? Certainly not on the field, where the Devil Rays continue to struggle. No, the Durham Bulls notariety this season seems well tailored for the ESPN police blotter. Earlier this season...

The Green Cap

I'm wearing a green cap in protest. A simple six panel hat with a neon green dollar sign symbolizes the real green cap that is screwing up baseball. The green cap is a barrier to entry to dozens of players each year who are held down on the farm by high-dollar contracts. Are you a top prospect in the Yankees farm system? Guys on death row will be executed faster than you will find yourself in...
