Aug. 11 Buffalo The Prodigal

BUFFALO -- In the middle of a four-game trek with the soon-to-be-extinct Ottawa Lynx, who came into Buffalo and took three out of four from the Bisons, whose season may be going down the drain.

The cellar dwelling Lynx are doing what they can to play the spoiler role. Chief among the party poopers tonight was first baseman/catcher Dusty Wathan, who played for Buffalo for three years, and whose two-run double helped hand his old mates a 6-4 setback.

Wathan, the son of former big leaguer John Wathan, is too modest to gloat.

But it's clear that he didn't mind sticking a dagger in his former club's ribs.

"It's always nice to do well against a former team," Wathan said. "I had some great years, here, and a great time. I really enjoyed the fans, and everybody here. But to come back and do well here is especially rewarding."

Despite his large frame (6-4, 215), Wathan has never owned much of a power stroke ( although he did belt three homers in one game while with the Bisons.) But his big hit, which came off  reliever Eric DuBose, was potent enough.

"I like to think," he said, "that a couple years ago, that would have been a home run."
