Aug. 3 Harrisburg PA Mayflies
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Greetings from Harrisburg, home of Commerce Bank Park, one of the funkiest places (and I'm not sure I mean that in the good way) in the baseball universe.
The setting is unique, on an island (City Island) in the middle of the Susquehenna River, with the skyline of Pennsylvania's state capitol in full panorama. The river view is among the best in baseball. Unfortunatelythe river itself is a breeding ground for mayflies, and drawn by the stadium lights at night, attack the ballpark by the millions.
Which would normally be of no consequence to me, except that Harrisburg also possesses the tiniest press box in organized ball (although the Harrisburg Senators, one would argue hardly qualify as organized), with no room for a visiting writer. Namely me.
Meaning, I sit outside the pressbox, working on a platform that is in itself, under cover and adequate. But it's also exposed to the barrage of mayflies, which I am still, even after writing about a 13-0 Portland blowout, I'm still picking out of my hair, off my shirt, and even out of my computer keyboard.
(Postgame, I was informed by a few Sea Dogs that the back of my shirt was covered with the little buggers. All I could say was, "It's a good thing, then, I wasn't facing the river").
Ah, good times......
